I understand a little better why having a testimony of the scriptures is important for me. As I mentioned in my first post, I have problems with some of the doctrines of the scriptures/Church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). These problems don't make me vindictive or hostile (at least not to my knowledge), I just question things a lot, maybe too much...but if you believe that God exists and that He answers our prayers, can you question thing too much? I guess we can't know all things yet so questioning everything is sort of pointless.
Anyways. I realized that these doctrines in the scriptures that are pretty intense for my mind (like agency, omnipotence, eternal and infinite life) don't need to be understood to be accepted. That's what a testimony is for. If I gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon, that builds upon a testimony that it was translated by the power of God through His prophet Joseph Smith, which builds upon the testimony that ancient prophets in the Americas were inspired by God to write these things. So as my testimony builds, I can cut out the middle and say "I believe the Book of Mormon is from God." And if I believe God's modern prophets: "It is translated correctly and a true book with true teachings." So I don't have to understand all the teachings because some of it is simply too intense for me to understand. Instead, I can have that blind faith people talk about and simply take the book on its word.
